This biography probes the unusual mind, the dramatic life, and the outstanding scientific work of Danish-born immunologist Niels Jerne (1911-1994). It is the story of the interaction between an individual scientist, Barbara McClintock, known to her colleagues as a maverick and a visionary, and a science, genetics, that has been distinguished in recent decades by extraordinary growth and dramatic transformation. The person and the field are contemporaries, born in the first years of this century. They grew to first maturity in sympathy and mutual prosperity: as a young scientist, McClintock achieved a level of recognition that few women could then imagine. But later years took them along distinct and divergent routes, and McClintock retreated into obscurity. Nas "zonas de fronteiras" das ciências, emprestando os conceitos de Gieryn (1999) e Kohler (2002), entre outros autores, é onde se organiza o trabalho de controle, isto é, do esforço dos cientistas para delimitar o que passará a ser, ou não, científico; para ampliar territórios disciplinares a custa de outros; para ocupar novos territórios; para estabelecer os limites entre o que se passou a chamar ciências puras e aplicadas; para hierarquizar os trabalhos de campo e de laboratório; para construir imagens públicas das ciências que justificassem a posse, por um grupo de cientistas e não por outro, de importantes territórios de culturas científicas e áreas disciplinares. Os textos desse livro nos convidam a problematizar controles, a transgredir fronteiras. Lauréate du prix Nobel de médecine en 1986, Rita Levi-Montalcini évoque les souvenirs qui ont marqué sa vie consacrée à Ia recherche scientifique. Après une enfance dans une famille juive très unie et des études de médecine à Turin, contrainte à l'inactivité par les lois raciales de l'ltalie fasciste, elle installe un laboratoire de fortune dans sa chambre. C'est là qu'elle entreprend les recherches sur le développement du système nerveux qu'elle poursuivra aux États-Unis aprés Ia guerre et qui aboutiront à Ia découverte du nerve growth factor - une substance capable de stimuler Ia croissance des fibres nerveuses - découverte qui représente pour l' ensemble de Ia biologie une avancée conceptuelle capitale. Some people calIed him an evil genius. Others just said he was a genius. Still, they unanimously saluted his brainpower. No other thinker shook Victorian England as deeply as Charles Darwin with his theory of evolution by natural seIection. But Darwin was the most unspectacular person of all time, a man known to his contemporaries as a quiet, methodical worker, devoted to his family, hard to prise out of his house in the country, averse to ostentation, utterly conventional in his behaviour, modest and unassuming about his results. His personality did not seem to match the incisive brilliance other people saw in his writings. Even Darwin sometimes wondered how he had done it. How had he, apparently one of the most ordinary of men, produced one of the most radical books of the nineteenth century and turned the society of his day upside down? Gennaio 1951: "Continuo a essere in luna di miele con i miei embrioni. Ogni giorno il piccolo spiraglio che ho aperto si apre un pochino di più e mi domando se è Ia grotta di apriti Sesamo che ho davanti a me". Quel piccolo spiraglio porterà Rita Levi-Montalcini al premio Nobel (1986). ln queste lettere ai familiari, che coprono l'arco di un quarto di secolo, Ia grande studiosa italiana offre non solo una descrizione della ricerca che ha cambiato il volto della biologia contemporanea, ma anche uno spaccato dell’esistenza quotidiana di chi ha dedicato Ia vita alla scienza ("quello del biologo è un gran bel mestiere!"). Affronta inoltre il grave problema del male del secolo, poiché "il cancro è Ia ribellione di una cellula alle leggi che regolano Ia vitalità di un organismo", una sorta di "ribellione di Satana contro Dio". E una testimonianza di altissimo valore umano e civile. Tre passioni "semplici, ma irresistibili" si intrecciano in questo Cantico: I'affetto per i propri cari, Ia dedizione alla ricerca scientifica e il "prodigare tutta me stessa per l'aiuto al prossimo". "L'impegno, Ia fiducia in se stessi, Ia serenità e il coraggio" sono le doti che ogni appartenente alla specie dell'Homo sapiens dovrebbe saper trarre dal proprio vissuto per affrontare le difficoltà dell'esistenza. ln tali termini, Rita Levi-Montalcini si congeda da quanti l'hanno seguita in questi tratti del suo percorso.  (Au.)

Depois de tanta pesquisa, entendemos melhor aquilo [...] que Saúde Pública é uma forma de pensar a saúde que interessa à população brasileira como um todo, e não somente a cada um de nós. [...] a história da saúde e a história do Brasil estão ligadas. Pudemos entender bem este ponto depois de tantos textos e tantas imagens a que conseguimos ter acesso.
